In this method, the water-soluble polymer is first dissolved in water and can be heated to 60°C. All other excipients such as colors, flavoring agents, sweeteners, etc. are dissolved separately. The two solutions obtained are then thoroughly mixed. The resulting solution is mixed with the API dissolved in a suitable solvent. The resulting solution is cast into a film and allowed to dry, which is then cut into pieces of the desired size.
In the hot melt extrusion method, the initial block is formed with the help of a carrier. To form the initial material, the drug is mixed with the carrier and a solid material is obtained and dried. The dried granular material is then introduced into the extruder.
Hot melt extrusion has some advantages: fewer operating units, minimal product waste, scale-up possibilities, water-free process, absence of organic solvents.
This method is most preferred when the film composition involves acid-insoluble polymers. First, the water-soluble polymer is dissolved in water. The obtained solution is added to a separately formed solution of acid-insoluble polymer. Both solutions are mixed correctly. Finally, the gel block is cast onto a film or tape using a thermally controlled drum.
This method involves the incorporation of a solid dispersion of the drug into a molten polymer solution for loading the drug. The drug is dissolved in a suitable liquid solvent and the obtained solution is added to the melt of a suitable polymer, which can be obtained at less than 70°C without removing the liquid solvent to obtain a solid dispersion. Finally the resulting solid dispersion is molded into a film by dye.
In the rolling method, the drug solution and the film-forming polymer solution are thoroughly mixed and the resulting solution or suspension is rolled. The solution or suspension should have specific rheological considerations. The film is dried on a roller and cut into the desired shape and size.
The film dissolves rapidly on contact with saliva, rapidly releasing active ingredients and fragrances. This quality makes edible films an excellent delivery method for a wide range of products that require rapid release in the mouth. For pharmaceutical use, this delivery method is particularly useful for pediatric or geriatric patients who have difficulty swallowing traditional tablets or capsules.
